Spread Feedback and Final Revisions

Image
Final Cover:  Updates and Revisions: Due to peer feedback, I've made a few minor changes to my spread. To begin, the title of the article has been changed from black to a deep red. The color brings out the text more and adds more life to the page. The deep color also ties into commitments to a jewel tone color scheme stated in previous blogs. This color also ties into the color scheme of the front cover as it has the same warm tones. The only other change was the increased size of the "written by" byline. I updated it from a size 12 to a size 14, bringing it out slightly to contrast the text of the article.

Final Spread Mockup

Image
The spread begins on the left page, a largely blank canvas. This spread would be the beginning of an article, as the left page is purely introducing the article. The text "Natural Inspection" is size 88  and uses the font size "Yeseva One". The use of this font ties into the front cover, which is also in "Yeseva One". Beneath the title is the "written by" line and sub-line, which introduces the article. These are both typed in "Times Neue Roman", another variation of the serif typeface. The use of serif fonts is to create an elegant, timeless appeal. The abundance of white space on the left page also ties into the intention of using serif fonts. White space  creates harmony when balanced with a busier design, in this case the text on the right page. While some may believe lots of dark, bold text is the key to creating an eye-catching page, the stark brightness of the mostly white page makes the little bit of text much more impactf...

Planning the Two-Page Spread

Image
Spread  1:   In all three spreads, Florence Pugh is used as a placeholder to for the actual image that will be used. The left side is completely the image. This creates a bold, powerful meaning to the image. The sheer size allows readers to inspect it more, making them believe it is salient. The right side, or second page, is completely filled with text. At the top of the page is the masthead, "Natural Inspection", in the font Bodoni FLF, and size 60.5. The masthead is centered, bolded, and italicized to assert superiority over the other text. Beneath the masthead is the "written by" line. The font used is "Times Neu Roman" is the font size 12. This text is less significant than the masthead, so there is no need to emphasize it with added text effects. Beneath this is the subline. This is in the same font as the previous and in a slightly larger size of 12.6. The text is centered and gives readers a brief description as to what the article is about. Beneat...

Two-Page Spread: Written Conventions

Image
Writing Styles: Often, the writing inside a fashion designed for younger, more progressive audiences is less academic and more informal. The use of informal writing styles, such as the inclusion of some slang or modern topics, draws in younger readers and allows them to feel connected to the topic of the article. Technical terms are used to describe elements of an outfit or idea, but are then served with examples and expressions that everyone may understand. Many fashion articles aim to challenge previous ideas. Fashion is about growing, evolving, and finding inspiration in the mundane. Because of this many fashion articles are written in first person, as the topic is often subjective to the person. Although first person and mild slang is used in articles, the integrity of the article should never be compromised. Fashion is ever-changing and often liberally charged, but older audiences must also be appealed to. The proposal of new ideas to older generations cannot be done if gram...

Final Table of Contents

Image
The Table of Contents Series Finale: Revisions and Results: After receiving feedback from peers, minor adjustments were made to mockup up 1of the table of contents, which was chosen as the final design. Suggestions included proposals of making the masthead larger, making "contents" larger, and adjusting the spacing of the articles. I raised the font size of the masthead from 70.7 to 74.7. I also raised the font size of "contents" from 16.8 to 18.8. The minor adjustments of these top of the page texts enlarges the impact of then and fills whitespace. Lastly, I evened out the spacing of the articles and their descriptions, creating a more professional, sophisticated appearance.  The implementation of minor peer feedback elevates the status of the magazine. As always, the goal of Eudaimonia is to create a fresh, clean approach to fashion and beauty, and the elegant, natural state of the table of contents matches it perfectly.
