Introduction to Fashion Magazines
What a Fashion Magazine Consists Of
The front cover of a fashion magazine is crucial in ensuring positive audience interaction. A photos need to express ideas without words so body language and lighting are key in conveying what message is really trying to be communicated. Simple emotions like joy can be shown through tight eyes and lifted cheeks, but many fashion magazines aim to convey more complex ideas like femininity vs. masculinity. Femininity is often expressed through head tilting, facing partially away from the camera, and positioning the body so that it takes up as little space as possible. Masculinity may be expressed through wide legged stances, direct eye contact with the camera, and shoulders back, although many fashion magazines are beginning to break away from gender norms. Magazines also use highlights, shadows, direction, and quality of light to accentuate a model's features and idea. High key lighting evokes a cheery, positive mood through lighting the entire figure of a model from the front, back and sides. Low key lighting uses large shadows and minimal highlights to express a moody, mysterious, and dramatic theme.Color is vital in securing audience interest. When a consumer picks up a magazine from a store, they are primarily drawn in by the colors on the cover. Bright colors, like cherry red or electric blue, manifest energy and passion, but may be harsh on the eyes. A stark white may be considered a neutral color due to its lack of pigment, but a solo, bright white can communicate purity and luxury. Neutral colors are associated with tranquility and elegance, but when used incorrectly, may bore the reader. The use of neutral colors must not be of strictly beige's and browns, but be accompanied by dark greens or reds in order to attract readers. Neutral colors may also be paired with an interesting model or headline in order to attract readers.

Many magazines utilize fashion industry icons, film stars, or other general celebrities to gain attention and popularity. The use of famous figure influences public opinions about what the figure is wearing and how consumers can duplicate it themselves. Musician, Harry Styles became the first man to stand solo on a Vogue cover due to his large fan base and popularity as a fashion icon. Vogue sold over 40,000 copies.
