Two-Page Spread: Written Conventions

Image
Writing Styles: Often, the writing inside a fashion designed for younger, more progressive audiences is less academic and more informal. The use of informal writing styles, such as the inclusion of some slang or modern topics, draws in younger readers and allows them to feel connected to the topic of the article. Technical terms are used to describe elements of an outfit or idea, but are then served with examples and expressions that everyone may understand. Many fashion articles aim to challenge previous ideas. Fashion is about growing, evolving, and finding inspiration in the mundane. Because of this many fashion articles are written in first person, as the topic is often subjective to the person. Although first person and mild slang is used in articles, the integrity of the article should never be compromised. Fashion is ever-changing and often liberally charged, but older audiences must also be appealed to. The proposal of new ideas to older generations cannot be done if gram...

Final Table of Contents

Image
The Table of Contents Series Finale: Revisions and Results: After receiving feedback from peers, minor adjustments were made to mockup up 1of the table of contents, which was chosen as the final design. Suggestions included proposals of making the masthead larger, making "contents" larger, and adjusting the spacing of the articles. I raised the font size of the masthead from 70.7 to 74.7. I also raised the font size of "contents" from 16.8 to 18.8. The minor adjustments of these top of the page texts enlarges the impact of then and fills whitespace. Lastly, I evened out the spacing of the articles and their descriptions, creating a more professional, sophisticated appearance.  The implementation of minor peer feedback elevates the status of the magazine. As always, the goal of Eudaimonia is to create a fresh, clean approach to fashion and beauty, and the elegant, natural state of the table of contents matches it perfectly.

Table of Contents Mockups

Image
Mockup 1: The creation of this mockup began with the biggest pieces- the masthead and images. The masthead is "Eudaimonia" referencing the name of the magazine. This creates a constant feature throughout the magazine. When a word is used often in relation to the magazine, a reputation is built. The font for the masthead is Yeseva One, the same as the masthead on the front cover. Using consistent fonts creates continuity throughout the magazine franchise and grows a trademark. The size of the masthead is 69.7, large enough to draw attention, but is not too large so that it takes up too much space. Directly beneath the masthead is the largest image on the page. This image is hand drawn and resembles the early stages of a fashion design. The idea behind this image is that a sketch is part of the beginning stages of a creation, just as the table of contents is at the beginning of a magazine. The sketch is rough and unpolished leaving room for change and variations, just as the t...

Table of Contents Original Content

Image
Content Images: Image 1: This image was created using the app "Painter". The process began with a rough sketch, drawn on paper which was seen in the previous blog. The brush used for this sketch was called "Waxy Pencil" in the size 23x. Small touch ups were made using the eraser brush "solid pen". I decided to use this image, as a sketch is the basis of all fashion creations. The table of contents is most often at the beginning of a magazine, setting an idea for the entire design. The color will remain black and white, creating a neutral pallet for the page. Other elements on  the page will feature more color, drawing out the sketch. While the drawing does not have much color, the components of the clothing give it life. The design is inspired by Harris Reed's spring 2022 collection, with the large hat and curvy leg and hip form.  Image 2:  Due to the sizing of the page, the quality of this image is reduced, but when put on a mockup of the table conte...

Table of Content Analysis and Sketches

Image
Table of Contents: A list of articles inside the first pages of a magazine to create an organized guide for readers.  Example 1: This table of contents was featured in Vogue, a well known fashion and lifestyle magazine. It begins with a large masthead, aligned to the right. This is also the title of the magazine, but it is not in the capital letters and font Vogue covers are known for. Instead, it is in all lowercase symbolizing it is not as significant as the cover. Above the masthead, is a small selling line stating the page is the table of contents along with the date directly next to it. A large photograph is placed beneath the masthead to the left. The off center masthead overlaps the image, signifying that the title is still the most prevalent piece of information on the page, highlighting how Vogue's reputation determines its dependability. The rest of the page is littered with page numbers and their corresponding articles, but subheadings section off pieces of the con...

Final Cover Revisions

Image
Final Cover: The final cover of this magazine will be Cover Photo 3, as referenced in the previous blog. This choice is a result of the positing of the model and color schemes of the photo.  Eye bags and acne have not been edited away, but stay highlighted on the models face to express natural human state. The eyes make direct contact with the camera, showing direct portrayal of emotions. Much of the core of the body is covered, like a mask, leaving the camera to highlight the skin of the model. The shadow of the model was not removed to create the effect that the model "stands out", against the background. The warm orange skirt and pale skin contrast with the black text throughout the page to highlight the bold parts of text and facial features. Canva and Picsart were the only editing software platforms used. Picsart was used to apply editing to the background, smoothing the texture of the wall. Canva was applied to the overall photo to add all text and graphics. The goa...

Cover Photo Editing

Image
Eudaimonia: human flourishing   In Eudaimonia Magazine, improving the mental and physical well-being of consumers is the main goal.  Through clothing and beauty articles, Eudaimonia Magazine shares the ins and outs of modern fashion. Eudaimonia Magazine was created through Canva,  a graphic design software, and Picsart, an online photo editor. The cover of this magazine features a variation of the cover line "The Secrets Behind Natural Beauty", with the cover photo directly tying to the article. The article goes in depth into the stereotypes and standards inside the fashion community about the appearance of skin and hair without filters or makeup. Due to the topic of the feature article, the model on the front cover wears no makeup, and will not be digitally touched up. This idea goes against most fashion magazine applications, as the fashion community strives to portray perfection.  Cover Photo 1: I began the process of editing this photo with touching up the b...

Cover Mockups

Image
Mockup: "a plan of how a page of a website, magazine, newspaper, etc. will look when it is finally created" Mockup 1: This cover resembles sketch three in the previous post. The masthead at the top of the page, the positioning of the arms, and the placement of the cover lines all directly resemble sketch three. Minor differences include the placement of the dateline, the placement of the minor cover lines, and the view of the body, as it is only from waist up. I began this mockup on a search for the best font. As stated in "Psychology of Fonts" I wanted to use the serif typeface for my masthead and main cover lines. Serif brings forth a sense of haute elegance, elevating the magazine's reputation. For the masthead the font "Yeseva One" was used. This bolded serif font draws attention to the masthead, the most important feature in differentiating this magazine from other brands. The next biggest feature on the page is the main cover line, "The Secr...
