Cover Mockups

Mockup: "a plan of how a page of a website, magazine, newspaper, etc. will look when it is finally created"

Mockup 1:

This cover resembles sketch three in the previous post. The masthead at the top of the page, the positioning of the arms, and the placement of the cover lines all directly resemble sketch three. Minor differences include the placement of the dateline, the placement of the minor cover lines, and the view of the body, as it is only from waist up. I began this mockup on a search for the best font. As stated in "Psychology of Fonts" I wanted to use the serif typeface for my masthead and main cover lines. Serif brings forth a sense of haute elegance, elevating the magazine's reputation. For the masthead the font "Yeseva One" was used. This bolded serif font draws attention to the masthead, the most important feature in differentiating this magazine from other brands. The next biggest feature on the page is the main cover line, "The Secrets behind natural beauty". This cover line is actually split into three bodies of text, "The", "Secrets", and "Behind Natural Beauty." The separation of the text gives the cover line a diagonal staircase effect, instead of overcrowding the center alignment.

Minor cover lines are placed to the left of the head and the right of the arm to showcase other article inside the magazine that aren't as important. The font "Agrandir Narrow" is used- a sans-serif font. The use of this font brigs contrast to the elegant font used in the masthead, signifying it is less significant. The off-center placement of these cover lines utilizes the "rule of thirds" affect often seen in film. Placed to the right beneath the masthead is the the dateline, signifying the date this magazine was "released". All text on this cover is colored black, as it stands out the most against the white and orange colors of the page. Black also represents authority and luxury, prompting consumers to believe what is written in inside the magazine.

Mockup 2:

This magazine mockup resembles sketch one. The vertical masthead aligned to the left, the placement of cover lines beneath and around the head, and the placement of the dateline and barcode directly parallel the sketch. Similarly, the placement of the model mirrors the sketch, sitting in the same position, but facing the opposite way. Like mockup one, I began with searching for fonts for the masthead and main cover lines. For the masthead, I went with the font "Vidaloka". This font is also part of the typeface "Serif", signifying sophistication. Unlike mockup one though, the masthead is placed vertically to the left of the cover. This gives the model more room to align to the right and forces cover lines to the right of the cover. Also unlike mockup one, most text on this cover is white instead of black. White stands out against the green background the more than black, drawing the eye to it. The masthead is the largest, boldest font contrasting the most against the background, so it is immediately deemed most important by consumers. I drew inspiration from mockup one for the main cover line, and used the diagonal staircase effect. The text "What is" and "Beauty" are typed in the font "Bodoni FLF"', while the word "Natural" is typed in the font "Yeseva One." To bring subtle contrast to the cover line, I colored "Natural" in a deep red. This highlights the word, accounting it as the principal part of the cover line. The red font also ties into the hints of red on the shirt and skin tone of the model.

The minor cover lines are scattered above and to the right of the model's head and body, appearing as if they are the model's thoughts. The text is typed in the font "Arapey", a serif font, and is smaller than other text on the page. The consumers will first look at the masthead and large cover line, and then view the smaller text. The dateline is placed in the top right corner in white, along with the barcode in the bottom right corner.

The Technology Behind it All:
